Welcome

t. Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir was formed in 1988 and has grown to be one of the largest in East Anglia with a wide repertoire of songs from 1940's Swing, Welsh Hymns, Spirituals, Folk Song and more modern material from Musical Theatre and the Charts. The choir has performed extensively throughout the United Kingdom assisting many charitable organisations in their fundraising activities.

The choir has also performed throughout Europe having undertaken tours of Belgium, France, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The choir was the first male voice choir in the UK to be invited to sing in the prestigious Estonian Song Festival and the event in 2009, has left a lasting impression on all who participated. 2010 saw the release of the choir's 3rd CD, 'Mysterium', which together with its predecessor, 'Colours', demonstrate the breadth and depth of their versatility. Just released in the choir's first DVD, 'Men at Song', recorded at Holy Innocent's Church, Great Barton, and at rehearsal in November 2010. CDs and DVDs are available for sale at all choir concerts.

History

he existence of the choir is partly due to a fire! In 1984 a fire totally destroyed the largest purpose built middle school in Suffolk. Following some political uncertainty, direct community action led to the rebuilding of the school. When it was re-opened various measures were encouraged to continue to foster the growing sense of community. What better way than through music. It was against this background that the idea of forming a male voice choir occurred. Four teachers just happened to meet in a pub, all with a passion for music and hey presto, a choir was born!

The original choir of less than twenty members gave concerts all over the town and then moved on to other parts of Suffolk. People were enthralled and others wanted to join. Today we have a membership of over eighty. We continue to rehearse in the same school and to this day, the conductor's wooden music stand bears black scorch marks from the fire, a reminder of that fateful day and the continual realization that joy can emerge from tragedy.
